Epidemiologists use figures such as the infection fatality rate in order to make these types of claims. But how truthful are they?<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Earlier in October, the World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/bulletin\/online_first\/BLT.20.265892.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.who.int\/bulletin\/online_first\/BLT.20.265892.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614057400530000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH3vf9Y7-rjvu0SG2kt3Tn_EVuNtA\">released a bulletin<\/a>\u00a0that calls into question just how deadly the SARS-CoV-2 virus really is.<\/p>\n<h2>Estimates of death from SARS-CoV-2 \u201cmuch lower\u201d than initially believed, according to Stanford study<\/h2>\n<p>On October 14, 2020, the WHO released the results of a peer-reviewed study by\u00a0Stanford University professor and physician,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0John\u00a0Ioannidis. His study estimates the infection fatality rate of COVID-19 and the virus that causes it, SARS-CoV-2.<\/p>\n<p>In case you need a refresher:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infection fatality rate is the proportion\u00a0of individuals who die of a disease compared to all infected individuals, whether they are\u00a0diagnosed or not<\/li>\n<li>Case fatality rate is\u00a0the proportion of individuals who die\u00a0of a disease compared to all individuals\u00a0with confirmed cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you might imagine, it can be difficult to determine infection fatality rate \u2013 how do you know, after all, how many people have a disease if they haven\u2019t even been diagnosed?\u00a0 But historically, experts use surveillance and other methods to make their best possible estimates.<\/p>\n<p>And these estimates matter, according to experts like Ioannidis. Infection fatality rates\u00a0give officials an idea of\u00a0\u201cthe probability of dying for a person who is infected,\u201d which can help drive prevention measures\u00a0and treatment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"m_-6220816311308151773mid-article-ad\">\n<p>You might also see how\u00a0<strong>a\u00a0disease could appear far\u00a0deadlier than it actually is if only looking at the case fatality rate<\/strong>.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because there could be many people with a disease who are\u00a0<em>never<\/em>\u00a0diagnosed and therefore aren\u2019t accounted for when calculating case fatality ratio.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So, what did this recent study find?<\/p>\n<p>In his study,\u00a0Ioannidis analyzed the best available data from 61 studies and 8 national preliminary estimates. Here are a few of his main conclusions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<em>median<\/em>\u00a0COVID-19 infection fatality rate was 0.27%<\/li>\n<li>In areas of the world with more than 500 deaths per 1 million people, the infection fatality rate was 0.57%<\/li>\n<li>In areas of the world with\u00a0118\u2013500 COVID-19 deaths\/million people, the infection fatality rate was 0.20%<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0rate was just 0.09% in locations with COVID-19 population mortality rates less than the global average<\/li>\n<li>For people younger than 70 years old, infection fatality rates ranged from 0.00% to 0.31% \u2013 with a corrected median of just 0.05% (less than the commonly cited infection fatality rate for the seasonal flu of 0.1%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In his conclusion, Ioannidis states\u00a0the \u201cinfection fatality rates tended to be much lower than estimates made earlier in the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>What numbers should we believe? Confusion rages about COVID-19 as we enter cold and flu season<\/h3>\n<p>Ioannidis\u2019s data is not alone, and other studies are also investigating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalhealth365.com\/who-covid-lockdowns-3592.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.naturalhealth365.com\/who-covid-lockdowns-3592.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1614057400530000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE7FjWfccPjOZJU3473hWhZDh3efA\">how deadly this virus truly is<\/a>. For example, a September 2020 study published in the\u00a0<em>Annals of Internal Medicine<\/em>\u00a0found that\u00a0<strong>people younger than 40 had an infection fatality rate of just\u00a00.01%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The same study \u2013 which analyzed community-dwelling individuals from the state of Indiana \u2013 also estimated that people older than 60 had an infection fatality rate of a whopping 1.71%, but that the overall rate was 0.26%, nearly the exact same as Ioannidis\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p>Estimates can vary a lot depending on the location, population age, and other factors, so interpreting this data can be difficult. Many of these studies also have several\u00a0limitations, including the possibility of response bias, false-positives, and misdiagnoses.<\/p>\n<p>So, what\u2019s the bottom line?<\/p>\n<p>Estimates are just that \u2013 estimates.\u00a0 Nobody knows for sure how deadly COVID-19 truly is right now. But preliminary data indicates\u00a0<strong>it\u2019s certainly not as deadly as initially believed\u00a0<\/strong>\u2026 which calls into question the decision to shut down the global economy during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, we don\u2019t recommend sitting by and waiting for the statistics to shake out.
